ABOUT US
Mission:
Volunteers rehabilitate homes for low-income
elderly and disabled homeowneers with genuine needs - particularly the
elderly, disabled and families with children.
Who we are:
Rebuilding Together South Sound was established in 2001 and is part of
the national Rebuilding Together organization (formerly Christmas in April).
We are a volunteer, charitable group and repair or rebuild homes at no
cost to low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled
or families with children.
RTSS is governed by a 14-member volunteer Board
of Directors and is staffed by a Program Director. Our affiliate is
part of the national Rebuilding Together organization that has 240 affiliates
in 50 states. The organization was first known as Christmas in April®,
which began in Midland, Texas in 1973 when a group of volunteers decided
to devote one day a year to repairing dilapidated homes in their community.
The project developed into the nations leading volunteer home repair
organization.
Across the country on National Rebuilding Day, over 225,000
volunteers rehabbed 8,670 houses and non-profit facilities. The work took
place in 865 cities and towns delivering a market value of $93 million.
How do we do it:
All work is done by volunteers at no cost
to the homeowner. Corporations, individuals and other groups can sponsor
or donate funds or materials to cover project
costs.
What we do:
Rebuilding Together South Sound has two programs. Our main program is Rebuilding Day, which takes place on the last weekend in April. Our second program is a year-round modification program. Since RTSS was established in 2002 we have:
· Completed repairs worth more than $1,970,000
at 102 projects,
· Worked with more than 2,390 volunteers,
· Installed 21 wheelchair ramps
· Installed 7 walk-in showers
· Installed handrails or grab bars at 34 homes
· Completed 24 roof repairs or replacements
